8.9 Earthquake struck Japan triggering a Tsunami Alert
Unfortunately our blog started up on a day when a massive earthquake hit Japan shores triggering a tsunami.
An Earthquake of the magnitude of 8.9 at a level of about 17 miles below earth’s surface struck Japan’s north eastern coast, setting up huge tsunami which sent in water waves as walls clearing everything that came in its course. Hundred of people were stranded and are dead, while official Yukio Edano tells that the toll could rise well be over 1000, houses were shattered, vehicles were washed away. 200-300 bodies were found in Sendai, the coastal city closest to the epicenter. authorities have recovered over 400 bodies with almost 100 still missing. thousands of homes were destroyed, roads impassable, inaccessible, phone networks were down. JR rail authorities say three trains are missing.
Japan’s Defense forces and firefighters are involved in rescue operations. Although due to the efforts by Japanese rescuers a lot many lives were saved, however the disaster assessment is still in waiting.
Japan officials issued evacuation orders on Saturday because of damage to two coolant systems of two separate nuclear power plants risk of radiation leak in small amounts was feared.
Rescuers searched for bodies buried under rubble as thousand of people were stranded, Japan was in desperation.
Quake first struck at 2:26 PM Tokyo time on Friday, rustling the furnitures, shaking buildings, then came along waves as high as 30 feet washing away whatever came in its course.
After quakes were felt as high as 7 on Richter’s scale. Vasily V. Titov, director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Center for Tsunami Research, said that coastal areas closest to the epicenter probably had about 15 to 30 minutes before the first wave of the tsunami struck. “In Japan, the public is among the best educated in the world about earthquakes and tsunamis,” he said. “But it’s still not enough time.”
